Photographs

I posted some more photographs of Seattle. Let me know what you think.

Starbucks Coffee

Yesterday I went to see The Incredibles. It was pretty good. A nice change too as I haven't seen a movie in a while and I haven't bought a TV yet. I did buy a cellphone today, so I am making some progress, however.

A New Look

It was another crazy week at work. I've very glad it's Friday. I'll probably add some new photos over the weekend.

I'm Back

It's been a while since I've posted anything. Mostly 'cause I've been really busy at work and really busy moving to my new apartment in Seattle. I still don't even have proper Internet. Dial-up is painfully slow, but is still better than nothing.

Some new photos: Some Assembly Required.

Hockey

Canada won the World Cup! :-)

I haven't really be updating this recently. Work is keeping me busy. I'm moving to a new apartment soon. (Thursday-ish). I need to buy a cellphone. And a bed.

But Canada won the World Cup so (almost) all is good in the World. :-)

Seattle

I moved to Seattle on Thursday and started work on Monday. Needless to say, things are pretty hectic right now. My corporate housing provides a nice view of (south) downtown Seattle though.

Second Place!

I was playing someone rated higher again. This time I had Black though, and I tried to defend with the King's Indian Defence. Unfortunately, it didn't end up seeming too defensive as he got a massive attack. He sacrificed too much though, and I should have been able to hold for a winning position. Alas, defending against a strong attack is easier said than done and I fell to a tactical oversight in time pressure. Nevertheless, I had a full point advantage prior to the last round over the pack that was tied for third. So when the dust settled, I was in a four-way tie for second in my section with 6.0 points (5-2-2). They haven't updated the crosstable yet, but I suspect that they'll do so soon.

Moving Day

Today was the second last day of the tournament. So this was the day that you needed to move up in the standings if you wanted to be a somebody. I started the day with 4.5 points (4-1-1), tied for second with one other person (in my section) and a full point out of first. My first game I played Black and ended up defending with a Sicilian Defence again. Unfortunately I dropped a pawn, but I managed to rally back and equalize to obtain a draw. For my second game of the day, I was paired against someone rated higher than me for the first time. (My section seems to be dominated by all the young people who have mostly lower ratings). The game ended up being very crazy and with each of us very low on time, I found a nice tactic to give myself a winning position. (Or more precisely, a mating net). All in all, a draw and a win made it a very good day. Being high in the crosstable to start the day, I didn't move much in the standings though! Currently, I'm alone in second place, only half a point back from the leader. But I've already played him. (He's the person who beat me back in round 4). So, I'll need to win (or draw) and get some help from his opponent if I am to catch up with him.

2 More W's

I won both my games today. :-) So I'm at 4-1-1 after 6 rounds. There are still 3 more rounds. But I'm guaranteed now to at least break even for the tournament. (i.e. finish at .500 or above). The standings are here.

No! Don't Move There!

I managed to get myself into a slightly inferior position in my first game today, which deteriorated into a losing endgame. By some miracle, however, I managed to salvage a draw. For my second game today, I got into horrible time trouble yet again. (Recall that if you run out of time then you lose). I made my first significant screw up of the tournament and lost a piece as I didn't enough time left to properly think about my move. The position was total chaos, but I think if I played properly then I would have ended up with the better position. Oh well, such is life. So I'm sitting at 2-1-1 and currently tied for 6th of 22 in the U2000 section. (There are five sections, U2000 being the middle one). Perhaps tomorrow will bring better luck.

A Good Start

Not very many people showed up Wednesday night for the blitz tournament. (For the uninitiated, that means you get 5 minutes to make all your moves. If you run out of time you lose). Barely more than 10% of those playing in the tournament proper played. I went 6-7-1 to finished tied 9th-13th of 18 players. Needless to say, the Grandmaster won.

Today was a little more successfully. I won both my games. I'm tired beyond belief now. I need to search the Internet to see if I can find cheaper parking at the University of Guelph, have a snack, prepare for tomorrow's first game and then get some sleep...

8 Days Of Chess

Yesterday was the first day of my eight days of chess. It was the third round of the summer round robin at the local club. I won. :-) But I seem to have reverted back to my old habits. I almost ran out of time. Today the Guelph Pro-Am International starts. While, there is just the "opening ceremonies" (whatever that entails) and then a blitz tournament. It starts for real tomorrow and run through to Monday. (Nine rounds in total). Then next Tuesday will be the fourth round of the tournament at the local club. I think I'll be really tired by then. I think I found the website for the Guelph tournament. Perhaps there will be updates during the tournament. (For reference, I'll be playing in the Under 2000 section).

I put up photos from my convocation as well as my camping trip. So that brings my photo gallery "up to date".

Round 2

Last night was the second round of the chess tournament that I'm in at the local chess club. Somehow I misplayed the opening and ended up at a slight disadvantage. There wasn't too much choice on what to do after that - I managed to force trading off lots of pieces to (more or less) equalize. The result was a fairly unclear endgame. I accepted a draw offer at that point as it seemed like a decent result. (Although, it probably would have been a good experience to play out the game and see what would happen).

I've finished posting all my photos from my trip to Europe. (While, technically that's not all the photos I took, but it's all the photos that I'm going to post here).

I'm Back...

After a two year hiatus, I've started playing chess again. Last night was the first round of the summer tournament at the local chess club. It is a double round robin with various groups of four. (So you should end up playing six games). I'm in the second group and seeded first (by a fair margin), so that adds a bit more pressure to do well. I played a decent, but conservative game to fetch a win in 53 moves, so I'm pleased that things are off to a good start.

Fahrenheit

Despite the fact that my primary occupation right now is loitering in my parents' basement, I seem to be busy all the time.

Thursday I went to see The Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind with some of my friends at the Princess Cinema. The movie was different, but good. I've never really been a Jim Carey fan, but I thought his acting was decent. I'd have to say that it's a film that is worth seeing.

Friday, I finished reading Hegemony Or Survival: America's Quest For Global Dominance by Noam Chomsky. I've never read anything by Chomsky before, but I have heard interesting things about him. I thought he gave compelling arguments for his thesis that America has held the prolonged goal to dominate the World at all cost (while eroding social programs and further enriching the elite). There is no doubt that the Right would describe it as seditious if the US was actually well read. (The National Endowment for the Arts said the other day that 53% of adult Americans don't read books at all). However, Chomsky is equal scathing in his criticism of Democratic presidents as well. (Although the Reagan-Bush-Bush administrations receive the bulk of his attack). Overall, I would say his assessment is a reasonable one. That said, there are a number of aspects where his argument is susceptible to a counter-arguments. (e.g. He scathes Clinton for acting in Kosovo, but also scathes Clinton for not acting in East Timor. If action and inaction are both reprehensible then it is hard not to be condemned). It is definitely a book worth reading as it adds perspective.

Yesterday I saw Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 with some other friends. I thought it was a good documentary. A lot of material was covered, but the current administration can be reproached along many avenues. However, I didn't learn a lot of new facts nor did the movie seem overly damning of Bush. Perhaps, it is because I live outside the US, where the media is not so sycophantic or perhaps it is rather hard to top the degree of criticism reached by Hegemony Or Survival. Or maybe after all the fuss made by the RNC, I expected the movie to be more assaulting. Again, this is worth seeing because it adds perspective. However, it lacks the entertaining moments contained in Bowling For Columbine or Supersize Me, so go expecting a more serious movie.

Camping

I'm back from my camping trip with my friends Darryl, Martin, and Austin at Ferris Provincial Park, which is outside Campbellford. (i.e. North of Trenton). But we had to drive to Kingston first to pick up Austin. It was a good weekend. We mostly spent it just hanging out, but we also did some fishing. I've never been fishing before. (Darryl and Martin were the fishers in the group). We caught a lot of small bass ("panfish"). Some of them we ate and some of them we threw back.

I've added photos from Florence, Pisa, and Monaco to my photos page over the past couple days. The only part of my Europe trip left to add is France. Afterward, I'll add some photos from my Convocation as well as from the camping trip.

Rome

Today I added photos from Rome I forgot to mention that yesterday I added photos from the Vatican. If I'm productive then tomorrow I'll add photos from Florence.

Lost In Translation

I rented the "Lost In Translation" DVD with my sister and brother-in-law last night. I had heard good things about it, but I found it slow and confusing, so I was disappointed.

I added some photos from Venice to my digital photo page. Only about 10 more places to go...

Ferris

We finally started organized our camping trip for the long weekend. We make a reservation for the Ferris Provincial Park as it was the only park south of Sudbury that had campsites still available for Canada Day weekend. It sounds like an okay, but the boating/fishing/swimming might not be quite as good as we had hoped as there is just a river going through the park.

Busy, Busy

This has been a really busy weekend. Saturday was my convocation. (I'm now a graduate with a Bachelor of Mathematics - Honours Double Combinatorics and Optimization & Computer Science Cooperative Program With Distinction - Dean's Honours List...or something like that). I had a lot of fun seeing my various friends although the ceremony was a little long.

Saturday as dinner with various relatives and Sunday was lunch with various other relatives. e.g. My cousin (who is back from a year of teaching in Iraq) came down from Ottawa with his girlfriend. Sunday night I went out with friends who were in town for Convocation and Friday I went out with other friends who were also in town for Convocation.

On Friday, we saw the movie Supersize Me. I thought it was really good. It is a documentary about a guy who eats nothing but McDonald's for a month. However, it is much more sophisticated than that. Rather than bashing McDonald's, it examines the state of people's health (wrt exercise and diet) in the US. He travels around interviewing various people, e.g. a law professor involved with law suits against McDonald's, a lobbyist for the food industry, a very obese guy who was getting his stomach stapled, the 3 doctors and 1 nutritionist who supervised him, etc. I'd recommend seeing it.

Tomorrow I'm planning on going to a talk at the Fields Institute in Toronto.

I also posted some photos from Liechtenstein and Austria on my digital photo page. Eventually I'll finish adding photos from my trip to Europe and then I'll add some from Convocation.

Friday, June 18, 2004

Switzerland

I've added 14 photos from Switzerland.

I put up photos from the Netherlands and Germany.

London

I'm still organizing all the photos I took in Europe. I've selected some from London and added commentary. You can find links to them from my digital photo page. I'll add photos from the rest of my trip over the next week or two.

I haven't really been up to anything exciting since I've returned. Convocation is Saturday. I'm hoping to go camping during the long weekend, but we are poorly organized. I heard that (another) one of my friends was hired by Microsoft and is going to move to Seattle. So I'll know at least one more person when I get there!

Paperwork

I just UPS-ed my visa-paperwork stuff to the lawyers in Boston. It took almost 3 hours to drive to school, get all the paperwork I needed from the Registrar's Office, and photocopy more stuff, find a UPS outlet, and drive back home. Hopefully it won't take too long before I can start work. I'll get bored if I have to sit around all summer waiting for a visa. (I know I'll miss my family though when I move away...)

Europe

Twenty-four hours from now I should be in Gatwick if all goes well. I'm off to Europe for 3 weeks. England, France, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy. Plus Liechtenstein, Monaco, and maybe the Vatican City if you want to count those as countries. Plus driving through Belgium. I'm not sure how often I'll have Internet access, so don't expect me to send e-mails or post updates too frequently, if at all.

Gmail

I just signed up for a Gmail beta account. I'm not sure whether all end up using it or not. I like having a real e-mail program instead of a lame online account. 1 GB would be useful though. They didn't say how frequently you need to use it to avoid having your account terminated either.

My first impressions are that the interface seems a little confusing, their "contacts" page needs help (All it takes is name, e-mail, and comments. And it only sorts names by what you enter, so no sorting by last name, for example). Also, Google seems to subscribe to the base-10 mis-theory of numbers (which was invented by hard drive manufacturers to rip people off). So the 1 GB is really only "1 000 MB". (And if they continue the trend with 1 MB = 1000 KB, etc. then you end up getting only 931 MB under the correct system (base-2). Also, when you send an e-mail, it returns to the sent mail list, but you need to refresh the page before the e-mail you just send actually gets listed. It seems like a good start though.

Photos (Again)

I've added a few photos I took the past month. A couple from Waterloo start here and three from Easter start here.

(It's Good) To Be Free

My last exam was this morning. So I'm FREE! Forever. Well not quite. But I'm done my undergraduate degree aside from showing up for convocation. (Assuming that I pass, but I think that's a given).

I haven't really done anything cool yet. Mostly just sleeping. (Between cramming, not being able to sleep, and having a 9 am exam, I only got a few hours of sleep last night). I started reading Daniel In Japan. It's an interesting write up about how his trip is going. But it is longer than my attention span right now. (That whole lack of sleep thing). I think I'll go watch the Leafs win. :-) Go Leafs go!

Stuff

I have less than a week of school left now! The Psychology final is on Saturday and the Distributed Computing final is on Tuesday. Then I'm free. My plans are to go on a European for 3 weeks in May.

Rogers (my ISP) finally stopped blocking their customers from access the nasa.gov domain after working "as quickly as possible" over 3 weeks. [sarcasm]. So I can finally access the Astronomy Picture Of The Day again.

I've also heard that Amazon's search engine, A9 has launched. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks interesting.

2 Down 3 To Go

Cryptography and Nuclear Science are over with. I think both finals went okay. The next one is Network Flow on Monday, which seems a long way off. I think I'll slack off tomorrow instead of studying. I sacrificed too much sleep to cram for Nuclear Science, so I'll sleep in nice and late I think.

Four Movies

On average, I'm 3 weeks behind in reading for my classes and there are less than 2 weeks left in term. However, instead of catching up on all that work, I watched a bunch of movies this weekend:

Bourne Identity is really great action movie. It is fast paced and a little suspenseful since you don't really know what is going on (Jason Bourne has amnesia, but seems to be some kind of spy/assassin and people that he can't remember are chasing him across Europe). One of the better movies I've seen in a long time.

Runaway Jury is a decent movie. Perhaps a little slow at times and I felt it didn't live up to its potential. Nevertheless, I liked the ending and John Cussack's acting was good.

Rush Hour 2 would be complemented if I called it a "B-movie". There was no plot. None. The fight scenes were few and far between. Chris Tucker is annoying. The out-takes they showed during the credits are the best part of the movie.

The Corporation is a really compelling documentary about how corporations (which are legal "persons") would be diagnosed as psychopaths if they were real persons. Definitely a left-wing documentary [but isn't that the best kind? ;-)]. It featured people such as Michael Moore, Noam Chomsky, Milton Friedman (Nobel Prize winning economist), the CEO of Shell (I can't remember his name), the CEO of Interface (some carpet company that is trying to become environmentally sustainable; again I forget his name), and various other notable people.

Tired

I'm glad this week is (basically) over. It has seemed really long. Perhaps because I've been so busy. Four days of class, two days of night class, a BBQ at Daniel & Andrew's, going to Moose Winooski's with Arun and Martin, plus homework = a lot of stuff and a lot of driving around...Oh I forgot the Brian Kernighan lecture that was this afternoon (What Should an Educated Person Know about Computers?). I found it interesting and he is a pretty good speaker. Perhaps it wasn't totally educational though as it was just a summary of a class he teaches at Princeton to inform arts students about what computers are, how they work, how pervasive they are, what contemporary issues involve computers, etc. (Being a Computer Science major I know all that stuff). Nevertheless, it was entertaining. I think more people came today than for the Aho talk back in January too.

Just one more class tomorrow before the weekend. (I want to go see The Corporation at Princess Cinema...)

Kronborg Castle

When the school term is over I want to travel in Europe for 3-4 weeks. I haven't really planned much though. I want to go to England, France, Denmark, Germany, and maybe Scotland and Italy.

Kronborg Castle is one of the cool sounded places that I'd like to visit. It is 45 minutes north of Copenhagen or so, in Elsinore (Helsingør). The castle was build over 400 years ago ago to protect the sound between Denmark and Sweden (although there were fortifications at the site since the 1400s). Among the castle's claims to fame is that it is where Shakespeare's Hamlet takes place.

No More RPC

I just submitted the CS 454 assignment. 3788 lines of code plus a couple of documents about how wonderful it is. [Well hopefully the TA thinks its wonderful :-)]. That is the end of my computer programming assignments as an undergrad student...Wow...That is a very nice realization (as I'm tired of being sleep deprived while chasing down segmentation faults..). :-) Time to make plans for going out tonight.

Thursday, March 11, 2004

The return of f0(int, int) is: 15

Just under 32 hours to go...the middleware layer actually works now! Well it works for a procedure that adds 5 to 10 and gets 15. My to do list is down to 4 things plus testing (and fixing bugs...well hopefully not) and writing all the documentation. Not too bad. I think I'll take a break...

Wednesday, March 10, 2004

Blood-Shot Eyes

Man, my distributed computing assignment is driving me crazy. It is due in about 46 hours and I still am not done coding (so I can't even test)...too many crazy errors and too many pieces...I'm almost done...have to write 3 more things before I can get the client and server talking, plus my to do list has 4 other things that I should...plus I need to write server-side skeletons and write a real client and server that I can use for testing...(and I haven't even thought about the write up that need to go with the RPC layer)...Procrastination is a bad thing.

Studying Sucks

The psychology midterm is tomorrow night and the cryptography midterm is Wednesday, so I'm coped up in my room cramming...It's not very fun. There are only so many multiple choice questions that one can do from the psychology study guide before going insane. I'm getting most of them right though, so I think I'll be okay. Plus, I just got an e-mail saying that the Network Flow assignment due date was extended to Friday (as the server that it was on has issues so people were having trouble downloading it). That's means I'll be able to get a reasonable amount of sleep Wednesday night. (My previous plan was to start it after my Wednesday night class...but every other week I've done that I've ended up sleep deprived).

Time Flies

I can't believe reading week(end) is over already. :-( I did too much homework to relax enough and too much slacking to get enough homework done.

Probably the most interesting thing I did was going Friday night with a bunch of my friends to an African-cuisine restaurant downtown. I don't think any of us were impressed. The service was really slow. I had a beef dish with beef chunks, sauce, and according to the menu, there were a few vegetables in there too, but there were so few, they were hard to find. It wasn't warm enough either. (Cold food isn't usually good food). The salad consisted exclusively of lettuce and tomatos - nothing else. And I don't like tomatos. The bread was interesting. The plates were pizza dishes and the bread covered the entire plate. It was kind of like a pancake, but cold and rubbery. For the portion-size and the quality of service, the prices were too high too. To be nice though, it was better than the last time we went to Jack Astors...

Other than that I've been working on Distributed Computing a lot. Aside from the midterm on Wednesday, there is a big programming assignment, where we have to implement a RPC middleware with a binder process and a bunch of other bells and whistles. It's not too terrible, except I couldn't find a partner, so I'm doing it all myself. (Hopefully the TAs will be cool with that). I figure I'm about 40% done. Most of the socket stuff is out of the way (I forgot how crazy some of socket stuff can be!). I have the server talking to the binder and vice versa, but I need to write the part where what they say is meaningful. (I think I'm into the outside-in programming methodology - kind of a blend of top-down and bottom-up!). For the client, I can rip-off (i.e. reuse) most of what I've already written as (I think) I've made it all nice and generic.

Thursday, February 19, 2004

Nuclear Science

I survived the nuclear science midterm. 24/25. :-) That's not too bad, considering I was making educated guesses for about a quarter of the questions. Multiple choice is so nice. :-) Hopefully the rest of my midterms will go just as well.

Wednesday, February 18, 2004

Reading Week(end)

Thanks to reading week(end), I'm done for the week! No more class! :-) [Alas, most other faculties have the entire week off...but 2 days off is still nice]. I think I'll slack off for the rest of the day and be lazy...watch lots of TV or something like that.

The registrar's office posted the final exam schedule. Once again I have a mediocre schedule - the 6th, 7th, 12th, 17th, and 20th of April. Nice and spread out so I have time to study, but they cover almost the entire exam period (which is the 5th to 22nd), so no chance of escaping early. :-(

New Photos

I put up some of the photos that I've taken this year. Most are from my grandmother's birthday party on Sunday, but the set is fairly assorted. I took a few in black-and-white try out that medium. I think they turned out fairly well for a first try. (Expect the JPEG format doesn't seem to compress black shirts very well when they are in black-and-white...)

Wednesday, February 11, 2004

Midterm

Argh! The Nuclear Science midterm was tonight. It was a lot harder than I was anticipating...but it was multiple choice, so as long as there are a lot of E's in the answer key then making educated guesses is sufficient. ;-)

Time to start the CO 351 assignment which is due in 11 hours and 19 minutes. Ram says it is very hard. I hope not...

Saturday, February 07, 2004

Procrastination

I reorganized my digital photos a bit. There are a few new photos. Most were on my old site, but I think the ones of the Westlake Centre fountain and traffic on Battery Street are "new".

I haven't taken too many photos this year, but later in the week, I'll put up some real new ones [unless all my assignments/quizzes/midterms take up all my time - I have 1 quiz, 3 assignments, and 1 midterm to worry about this week. :-(]

Night Class

Tuesdays and Wednesdays I have night class. Night class can be a bit of a drag because I have to travel back to school for a second time on those days. Plus the lectures are about 3 hours long, which is way longer than my attention span.

Last night was Psychology. It seems every unit has some kind of unethical experiment. Last night the lecture was about dreams and learning. Apparently Pavlov locked dogs in cages, starved them, and cut up their digestive tracts before teaching them to salivate when he rang a bell. Watson taught a little kid to be afraid of white fluffy things such as rabbits and Santa Claus beards by giving them a rabbit to play with then sneaking up from behind scaring the kid. The experiment ended when the kids mother stopped taking him to day care...

Here's a interesting article by Bruce Schneier that I saw. It is about identification cards and security. He makes a few good arguments against over stating the value of IDs. [Nevertheless, IDs have their (limited) uses].

Busy Day

I just got back from Daniel's/Geoff's/Andrew's where they were deep frying stuff. Lots of people were there; most of them I haven't seen in a while too as I'm not in any Pure Math classes these days. It was good times. [I missed the Leafs game though - they got revenge against Ottawa, winning 5-1. :-)]...I spent the afternoon at school working on Waterloo's January local programming contest. It was hard problem set. The standings are here - I was 15th out of 44 (or so). I only got one problem (E). I couldn't figure out how to properly solve the next-easiest (C), so I spent the rest of my time on the only problem no one solved (A).

Math Awards

The Math Awards Banquet was tonight. A lot of people won awards or scholarships - more than last time I was there. (I won the Combinatorics and Optimization book prize). It was mostly people from 1st and 2nd year (winning entrance scholarships), but I saw a few people I know that I haven't seen in a while - Ian, Martha, Jon, Brendan. I also think they served the same meal as last time - chicken, vegetables, and potato. It was okay though and their coffee was decent. (Although I haven't had too much coffee since I left Seattle).

Snow Day

Snow days are cool. :-) Class was cancelled, so after breakfast I went back to bed for another couple of hours of sleep. And Tuesday is my busiest day too, with 6 hours of lectures (3 in the morning and 3 in the evening). The afternoon and evening haven't been very productive, but I finished the Network Flow assignment that is due Thursday, started the Distributed Computing assignment, and did a little reading.

It's not very cold outside anymore (maybe only -10 below), but there is a fair bit more snow. When I went on a walk with Clancy (my dog), the bottom 6 - 8 inches of my pants ended up covered in snow by the time we got home. If I can make off of my street (which never gets plowed), I think (hope) the driving won't be too bad tomorrow.

The Teeth of the Tiger

I finished reading The Teeth of the Tiger by Tom Clancy a couple days ago. It's the first novel that I've read in a long time. (Too many textbooks and assorted non-fiction). I thought it was pretty good. It was shorter than most of his books and, consequently, the plot and characters were not as rich as some of his other books. (Jack Ryan is no longer the main character - he's retired and his son, aptly named Jack Ryan Jr., is now the protagonist). The only thing I didn't like is that it was set up a little much for a sequel - a few obvious, but unspecific, foreshadowings to characters and events that don't occur. All in all though, it was good read.

Template

I started playing around with the template a bit...Blogger doesn't seem to want to republish the blog though. So I'm making a post to nudge it along (hopefully)...

Slacking

It is nice having only one hour of class on Mondays and Fridays. Not quite as nice as it would be to have zero hours of class, but still it makes the week seem a lot shorter. I spent too much of that free time slacking off though. I added some thumbnails to the index page for my digital photos and stylized it up a bit. I like it a lot better now. I better going and start my CO 351 assignment...

Randomness and the Netscape Browser

The Leafs are losing to Philadelphia yet again, :-( so I am working on my Cryptography homework again. The article Randomness and the Netscape Browser is kind of interesting, but perhaps not very profound.

I figure out how to add titles to my blog posts, so that can be my improvement for today. Ram sent me a copy of his blog template to use as a reference, so soon I'll make something better than the default template.

Prof. Aho

CS started a "Distinguished Lecture Series". Prof. Aho from Columbia (the university, not the country) gave a talk about programming languages and compilers. It was mostly about the reliability of software, quantum computing, and how to craft compilers to address these two areas. It was kind of interesting. There were tonnes of people there - standing room only in one of the larger lecture halls on campus. A much higher turnout than one would expect for a Friday afternoon extracurricular event.

The Leafs are losing to Philadelphia again. :-( I think I'll work on my Cryptography assignment...

Photos!

I've copied over photos and other stuff to my new website. I've reorganized my digital photos a bit, and hopefully improved the overall quality. I've also added some new photos from Christmas and the fall (while that first one is actually from the spring). Most of the "older" photos were on my old site, but some are new additions - I'm too lazy to make a complete list, but here are a few.

I have night class for the next two days, but sometime in the near future I'll try to improve the "look-and-feel" as well as the navigation. I also want to play around with the blogger template to make the blog better too.

Webspace

The nice folks at 1-and-1 have a promotion for 500 MB of free webspace for 3 years. Ram signed up a while ago and even bought a domain name. I think I'll be a little bit less ambitious...For now I'll just copy over some of my photos and reorganize them a bit. 500 MB is a lot more space than the 10 MB my ISP Rogers gives out!

A Blog

I have too much time on my hands, so I'm starting a blog. If all goes well, I'll have a new website too with more webspace for all my photos...
